Ceiling Fan Installation in Columbia, MO

A Columbia summer is long, hot and sticky, with highs near 90 degrees for weeks at a stretch and humidity that makes it feel worse. Ceiling fans make that bearable without running the air conditioner flat out, and in the shoulder seasons they let you skip the AC altogether. That's why fans come up on so many of our lists. In older homes, the upstairs bedrooms under the roof in East Campus and the Old Southwest bungalows can be ten degrees hotter than the first floor. Ranches from the 1960s and 1970s often have only a center light in each room, wired to a box that was never meant to hold a spinning fan. Newer houses south of Nifong and out in Ashland have tall great rooms and vaulted bedrooms that need downrods and angled mounts. And everyone wants a fan on the screened porch or covered patio once June arrives.

Installing a ceiling fan correctly starts with the box in the ceiling. A fan is heavy and moves, so it has to hang from a fan-rated box fastened to a joist or a brace between joists. We check what's there and replace it when it isn't up to the job, working from below so you don't need to open up the ceiling. Our licensed electricians handle the wiring connections, including adding a wall control or splitting the light and fan onto separate switches where the wiring allows it. We assemble the fan, set the downrod length for your ceiling height, attach the blades, balance them so the fan doesn't wobble, and test every speed and the reverse function. Old fixtures get removed and hauled off, and any gap around the canopy is patched and touched up.

What this covers

  • Replacing light fixtures with ceiling fans
  • Replacing old or noisy fans
  • Fan-rated box and brace installation
  • Downrods and angled mounts for high and vaulted ceilings
  • Outdoor and damp-rated porch fans
  • Wall controls, remotes and smart fan switches
  • Blade balancing and wobble repair
  • Removal and haul-off of the old fixture
A note from around here: Hot upstairs bedrooms in the older homes of East Campus and the Old Southwest and the vaulted great rooms of south Columbia subdivisions are where we put up the most fans, along with covered patios across Boone County.

How a ceiling fan installation visit usually goes

Check the Box

We look at the existing ceiling box, framing and wiring, and confirm the fan's size and mount suit the room.

Install a Rated Support

A fan-rated box and brace are installed from below if the existing box isn't strong enough.

Hang and Connect

The fan is assembled, mounted at the right height and connected by our licensed electricians with the controls you chose.

Balance and Test

Blades are balanced, every speed and the reverse function are tested, and the area is cleaned up.

Columbia's long cooling season makes fan direction worth a mention. In summer, the blades should turn counterclockwise when you look up at them, pushing air down to create a breeze. In winter, a slow clockwise setting pulls air up and gently moves the warm air that collects near the ceiling back down the walls, which helps in rooms with high ceilings. Most fans have a small switch on the motor housing or a button on the remote for this. We set it correctly when we install a fan and show you how to switch it when the seasons change.

What shapes the price in Columbia

The cost of a ceiling fan installation depends on the ceiling, the box and the wiring. Replacing an existing fan on a sound, fan-rated box is the simplest version. Swapping a light fixture for a fan usually means installing a new rated box and brace. Tall or vaulted ceilings require taller ladders, longer downrods and sometimes angled mounts. Adding a wall control, splitting the fan and light onto separate switches or running a new circuit to a porch adds time. Large or heavy designer fans with many parts take longer to assemble. Doing several fans in one visit is the most efficient approach.

Neighbors often ask

Can a ceiling fan go where I have a light now?

Usually, yes. The key is the electrical box. Many ceiling boxes, especially in older homes and ranches, are rated only for a light fixture. We swap it for a fan-rated box with a brace that spans the joists, then our licensed electricians make the connections. If there's no wall switch, or you want separate control for the light and the fan, we'll look at what the existing wiring allows and give you options.

What size fan do I need?

It depends on the room. As a rough guide, a small bedroom or office does well with a fan around 42 to 44 inches, a typical bedroom or family room with 52 inches, and a large great room with 60 inches or more, sometimes two fans. Ceiling height matters too: the blades should be about eight to nine feet off the floor, which in a tall room means a longer downrod.

Can you install a fan on my covered porch?

Yes. Outdoor fans need to be damp-rated for a covered porch or wet-rated if any rain can reach them, and Missouri humidity is hard on indoor fans used outside. We mount the fan to a properly rated box, our electricians connect it to an existing porch light circuit or a new one, and we choose hardware that won't rust out after a few summers.

My fan wobbles and clicks. Can you fix it without replacing it?

Often. A wobbly fan usually has a loose mounting bracket, blades that are out of balance or a blade arm that's slightly bent. We tighten the mount, check the box, balance the blades with a kit and replace any bent parts. If the box itself is loose or not fan-rated, we fix that first, since it's a safety issue.

Can you put in a fan with a smart control?

Yes. We can install fans with remote or app control, or add a smart fan and light switch at the wall that works with voice assistants. We'll make sure the control is compatible with the fan's motor so it doesn't hum or run erratically.
