Furniture Assembly in Columbia, MO

Columbia moves a lot. Every August thousands of students arrive at Mizzou, Stephens and Columbia College, faculty and hospital staff relocate for new positions at the university's health system and Boone Hospital, and families keep filling new houses in the south and east subdivisions and out in Ashland and Hallsville. Almost all of that moving comes with a pile of boxes from online stores and big-box retailers, and flat-pack furniture is where good weekends go to die. Instructions with no words, a hundred identical cam locks, a missing dowel and a dresser that wobbles when it's done are standard. On top of that, apartment stairs and narrow hallways in older East Campus houses mean a lot of pieces have to be built in the room they'll live in. That's the job we take off your hands.

We arrive with the right drivers, bits and clamps, open the boxes in the room where the piece will stay, check the parts against the list and build it carefully, square and tight. Cam locks are seated fully, drawer slides adjusted so they run smoothly, doors leveled so they close evenly and shelves set level. Dressers, bookcases and tall cabinets get anti-tip anchors fastened into wall studs, which matters in any home with small children and is often required by apartment rules too. Bed frames are checked for squeak points and racking, desks for wobble, and outdoor playsets for level ground and properly tightened hardware. When we're done, the cardboard and packing material is broken down and bagged or hauled away, and you get a finished room instead of a pile of parts.

What this covers

  • Beds, bunk beds and loft beds
  • Dressers, wardrobes and nightstands
  • Desks, office chairs and standing desks
  • Bookcases and shelving units
  • Cribs, changing tables and nursery furniture
  • Outdoor furniture, grills and playsets
  • Anti-tip anchoring into wall studs
  • Packaging breakdown and cleanup
A note from around here: Students and faculty moving into East Campus, Benton-Stephens and the big complexes along Providence, Stadium and Grindstone keep us busy in August, while new homeowners in subdivisions off Scott Boulevard and in Ashland call when the nursery or home office needs setting up.

How a furniture assembly visit usually goes

Unbox and Inventory

We open everything in the room where it will stay and check the parts and hardware against the list before assembling.

Build It Right

Each piece is assembled square and tight, with cam locks fully seated, drawers aligned and doors adjusted to close evenly.

Anchor and Level

Tall pieces are fastened into wall studs with anti-tip hardware, and everything is leveled on your floor.

Clean Up

Cardboard, foam and plastic are broken down, bagged or removed, and the room is left ready to use.

The second big season here is late spring, when people set up outdoor furniture, grills and kids' playsets in time for Missouri's long warm months. Yards in the newer subdivisions are often sloped, and the clay soil common across Boone County can be soft after spring rains and rock hard by August. For playsets and swing sets, we level the ground under the legs, set the frame square, and anchor it according to the manufacturer's instructions so it doesn't walk or tip under active kids. We'll also tell you when a spot gets too much runoff after storms and suggest a better location before we build.

What shapes the price in Columbia

Furniture assembly is priced by how many pieces there are and how complicated each one is. A simple nightstand or bookcase takes much less time than a wardrobe with sliding doors, a sectional sofa with a lot of hardware, or a loft bed with a desk built into it. Outdoor playsets and gazebos are the biggest jobs and depend on the ground they go on. Third-floor walk-ups and tight stairwells add time if we have to carry boxes up. Anchoring to plaster walls takes a little longer than drywall. The best value comes from building everything in one visit, so send us the full list of what's arriving.

Neighbors often ask

Can you build a loft bed in a student apartment?

Yes. Loft and bunk beds are a big part of our August work around campus. We assemble them in the room, tighten every bolt properly, check that the guardrails and ladder are secure, and set the bed so it doesn't rack when someone climbs it. If the unit has carpet over concrete or uneven floors, we shim the feet so it sits solid. We'll also show you which bolts to check after the first few weeks of use.

Do you anchor furniture to the wall?

Yes, every tall or top-heavy piece we build, unless you tell us not to. Tip-over accidents with dressers and bookcases are a real danger in homes with kids, and most furniture now ships with an anchor kit. We fasten it into a stud rather than just drywall. In older plaster walls we drill carefully and find the framing. If you rent, we'll use the smallest anchor that still does the job and tell you where it is for move-out.

What if a part is missing or broken?

It happens more than it should. We check every part before we start, and if something is missing or damaged, we'll often be able to substitute standard hardware on the spot. If a manufacturer-specific part is needed, we'll help you request it, build everything we can and come back to finish when it arrives.

Can you take apart furniture for a move and put it back together?

Yes. We disassemble beds, desks, shelving and other pieces, bag and label the hardware, and can reassemble them at your new place, whether that's across town or out in Ashland or Hallsville. Moving companies often charge more for this or skip it, so it's a common request.

Will you assemble office furniture for a small business?

Yes. We build desks, chairs, filing cabinets, shelving and conference tables for small offices around Columbia, from downtown storefronts to the medical and professional buildings off Broadway, Nifong and Keene Street, and we can schedule outside business hours so we don't interrupt your day. Tall shelving and cabinets in a workplace get anchored to the wall the same way they would at home, and we leave the space clean and ready for Monday morning.
